The “House Critters” Easter Morning
Henrietta
and the rest of the house critters had been lying around in various parts of
the house for most of the morning when she noticed Barbara, the oldest human female;
bring out a new flag from the back walk in closet. Flags are special to the
critters because they mean changes to the decorations which normally meant a
special day or season is coming and there will be treats.
Henrietta Bobbie Bunny was the eldest of the
critters and she gathered up the other critters to figure out what was going to
happen. Big Bunny and Blue Booby were in the living room hopping on the couch,
while Ducky Duck and Rainy Reindeer were in the bed room snuggled up on a bunch
of pillows. Henrietta got the two from the couch and went in to join the two on
the bed which placed all five of the critters in one place. Ducky said “the
flag was many colors and we both think Snoopy was on it.” Nobody could think of
what special day this flag represented.
Barb started
taking down all the snowmen and skiers along with removing winter outfits from
the stuffed rabbits and bears in the antique room. The decorations were
replaced with rabbits and ducks while the new outfits were bright spring colors.
There was also a very large rabbit that was put on the commode in the living
room along with a bowl of colored eggs.
None of the
critters had a good long term memory but between them they usually came up with
what was related to flags and decorations. After the talking went on for a
while Big went into the living room and watched Bob, the male human, put the
flag out on the front porch. When Big went back to the group he confirmed that
Snoopy was on the flag and he was riding a very large brightly colored egg. Blue
remembered a time when the humans had looked around many of the downstairs room
to find colored eggs that had candy inside them. Rainy followed this with
remembering them going outside to do the same thing only with bigger eggs that
were all white. They didn’t remember what the special day was called but the
possibility of having treats kept them paying attention to what the humans were
doing.
Henrietta
though they had got it wrong when nothing special happened for days and was
about to give up on treats when things started to happen. It was early morning,
before the adult humans ever got out of bed, when she heard sounds coming from
the living room and went to investigate. Amy, the young female human, was scurrying
around hiding colored eggs and other items in, under and behind anything she
could in five of the downstairs rooms. Henrietta was so intent on watching Amy
she didn’t notice Avatar, Amy’s boy friend of many years, come into the room
and when she did she jumped into Amy. Amy put a finger up to her lips which
Henrietta knew meant to keep quite. They had an item for each person for each
room, with each of them hiding stuff for the other. Amy told Henrietta that
there would be critter treats hidden for the outside egg hunt planned for the afternoon.
After the
older humans got up and had some coffee the indoor egg hunt got started. With
one item each in five rooms it took awhile as you weren’t to pick up somebody
elses treat or let them know where you found theirs. A few of the better hiding
spots included the ledge under the leafs in the dining room table, an egg
hidden in the goblet of Mickey eggs and one for Bob that Amy put on top of a
hutch using a step stool so he couldn’t just reach up and feel it.
The critters got a surprise when Avatar let them know there was a critter item in each of
the five rooms, which if you paid attention at the beginning of the story
worked out perfectly. There were chocolates of all types for the humans and a special
handmade veggie treat custom made for each critter!
